Shipmates' Symposium 36 Navy | Summer 2018 T RICARE is something many military retirees feel is a great benefit to them, whether retiring from active duty or the Reserves. For those who were in the Reserve Component, we oen utilized while still in a drilling status the option to pay for dental care. Once we retired, we then opted for TRDP, or the TRICARE Retiree Dental Program. e TDRP will end Dec. 31, 2018, but there's still time to explore what is being offered to us instead of TRDP. While the current program expires at the end of the year, you MUST make your choices between Nov. 12 and Dec. 10, a period of time called the "2018 Federal Benefits Open Season" (which is an annual thing, for those of us who are unfamiliar with federal civil service life). It is important to note that anyone currently in TRDP does NOT have automatic coverage in any of these options. In other words, all retirees — whether already using TRDP or not — are being treated as first-time choosers of dental and vision insurance options. If you already are a federal civil servant with a vision plan, it appears you may retain that plan. Coverage begins, of course, Jan. 1, 2019. For many, the choices are greatly expanded. For example, for Reservists who are not also federal employees, we may not have had any options for vision plans. ose are now open to us. ere will be 10 dental and four vision care options in the new Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insur- ance Program (FEDVIP). ere will be options to enroll by calling, but the preferred method will be by using the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) website called BENEFEDS ( Please note that there is no guarantee that the premiums quoted at the time you choose during the enrollment period will remain in effect annually. Of course, they may rise as the market changes. e OPM website has full PDF versions of every insurance provider's plans. You can browse or down- load and make your decision at your own pace, as long as you are ready for BENEFEDS at the start of the open season: plan-information/ e following are dental insurers participating in the federal plan. Please note that you must currently be enrolled in the TRDP in order to opt for any of these by enrolling in FEDVIP, or you must be enrolled in any TRICARE health plan in order to choose a dental plan from FEDVIP. ere are six Nationwide Plans (INCONUS, or in the continental United States, and OCONUS, or outside it): ❑ Aetna Life Insurance Company ❑ Delta Dental ❑ FEP Blue Dental ❑ Government Employees Health Association Inc. (GEHA) ❑ MetLife Inc. ❑ United Concordia Companies Inc. ere are four Regional Plans (no international coverage; coverage only in designated areas): ❑ Dominion Dental ❑ Emblem Health Inc. ❑ Humana ❑ Triple S Salud Inc. All of the Nationwide and Regional plans are Preferred Provider Organizations, or PPOs, with the exception of Dominion, which is a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) and Humana, which is a Fee For Service/PPO Closed Panel.
