ON BASE 45 Association of the United States Navy PET T Y OFFICER MERCADO S ailors with a maintenance unit in Orlando, Fla., managed to fit in some critical community volunteer work into their busy work schedules. Over the past year, the officers and enlisted members of SSGN CMAV LANT, a submarine mainte- nance unit based in Orlando, Fla., along with members from Reserve units from SUBLANT UWO 1 and CTF 69 UWO ATL have provided support to Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, Fla., refits, continuing maintenance availability (CMAV) and Commander, Submarine Group 10. e maintenance and repair support provided the USS Tennessee, Alaska, Oklahoma, Virginia, Florida, Georgia and West Virginia included topside preservation, inventory management, equipment planned maintenance interval, onloading and offloading supplies, hull corro- sion prevention and standing fire watches. During this support, they received safety, environmental, hazardous materials and respirator training. Most recently, in support of the USS Georgia's Deck Division, the members performed ballast tank preservation and removed more than 200 zinc blocks from the boat's ballast tanks. Members also received eater Anti-Submarine Warfare training - eater Augmentation at the Undersea Warfighting Develop- ment Center and supported Exercise Talisman Saber, U.S. Pacific Fleet, in Pearl Harbor. Despite that heavy workload, the unit members additionally provided over 50 volunteer hours at the St. Mary's Submarine Museum. As a result of Hurri- cane Irma's impact on the St. Mary's waterfront, unit members were tasked with moving the torpedo engine bay, warhead section and torpedo tube breach door from temporary storage back to their permanent loca- tions. ey also assisted in reinstalling the inside lobby doors and display covers to better showcase submarine artifacts.
