Our advocacy on Capitol Hill will remain rigorous but focused and we will amp up our eorts towards a strong Navy by helping sailors grow professionally with the training they need, the careers they earn, and the futures they want. Our energies will be collective in helping to provide the very best for our wounded ship- mates, our Navy families and our honored veterans. To do so, we'll be leaning on our current and new chapters to help dovetail our eorts with the Navy's Wounded Warrior Program to provide the support beyond what they give. You've by now heard that AUSN is combining forces with the Navy Safe Harbor Foundation (NSHF) to bring relief to our wounded, ill and injured shipmates. Headed by its director, Heidi Weller, NSHF works in tandem with the Department of the Navy's Wounded Warrior/Safe Harbor Program (NWWSHP) in 13 regions nationally to help sailors and their families in need of relief. To put this in perspective, in 2017 alone, nearly 6,000 sailors required assistance from the Navy's Wounded Warrior Program, and those numbers have been rising by triple-digits each year. In the past 've years, over 20,000 shipmates have needed care and for every tragic occurrence that befalls just one of our sailors, it's estimated that at least 10 people are also impacted — a beloved spouse doubling as caregiver, children deserving of normalcy, parents, battle- buddies, and friends are also touched by tragedy's reach. In the past 've years, that's almost quarter of a million people. Sadly, it's likely those numbers will rise in the future. "e Navy is generous but limited in its resources, and can only provide aid to certain individuals. For those on active duty, medical and non-medical aid is well-managed and provided for by the Navy. For those who have separated from the Navy, their families, and the many who support them, the Navy turns 'rst to the Navy Safe Harbor Foundation for relief. Essentially, it's Sailors helping Sailors, the Navy Way. "at's the spirit behind the success of the NSHF's mission and it is the perfect opportunity for AUSN's chapters to work toward in the future. While the membership trends for many other military-related organizations are in decline, AUSN's con'dence in its membership and the commitment of those within the naval community to provide for its wounded shipmates "the Navy way," will go a long way in helping us achieve our goals. Decades a™er speaking them, CNO Anderson's words have found renewed meaning here at AUSN. Only when combining past tradition with the future can we look with pride and con'dence in both direc- tions. For AUSN, it's a sharpened focus as we advocate for a strong Navy, help sailors grow professionally and personally and provide the very best for our wounded shipmates, our Navy families and our honored veterans.
