9 Association of the United States Navy Membership Update O ur membership plan in 2017 is to grow in rank and influence, serve our Sailors the best we can and to inform our Sailors with the information necessary to help them do their naval or civilian jobs expertly — and to lead healthy lives. In short, we plan on being "Sail- ors Helping Sailors." We've asked a lot of our members in 2016. We're blessed with a dedicated and active membership who've worked hard to serve our U.S. Navy and to uphold AUSN's goals and objectives. Every day we hear from many of you, whether it's to band together with enough force to answer the call, or to "muster up" with generous donations. You have been honest and forthright when giving us your opinions, or to buy keepsakes like our popular Christmas ornament to help foster growth in our organization. All of this … from the ideas to the actions… has been the foun- dation that has established AUSN as "The Voice for America's Sailors." e question we have to ask ourselves in 2017 is what do we want our individual legacies to be? How can I help future generations of AUSN members and what do I want them to know about me? What is my living legacy? ree possibilities to consider; 1) Create a living legacy that sponsors Sailors' memberships; 2) Create an endowment that enables AUSN to push forward for generations to come, and; 3) Contribute to AUSN's educational foundation which helps inspire new Sailors. Perhaps you have an idea for how your legacy can be honored, and if so, let us know and we will be glad to help establish your future role at AUSN. Together, we are Sailors Helping Sailors. We plan to fortify our regional and local chapters with their interests and projects this year. Where those chapters are inactive, we plan to corral local members and "bring them back aboard." We're going to rely on our grassroots organization to reach out to Sailors and friends of the Navy and invite them to be part of our mission. Our intent is to listen, learn and react in order to create a membership momentum in 2017 necessary to match the rapid changes that surely await us. We look forward to serving you in the New Year and beyond. Brian B. Bauman is the Director of Membership and Marketing at AUSN. He can be reached at .
