12 Navy | Winter 2017 2016 was a productive year. AUSN met with 320 members of Congressional Staff, as well as the Secretary of the Veterans Administration and the Secretary of Education. The 2017 NDAA, recently signed into law, marks change for personnel and medical benefits, including a large majority of AUSN's advocacy priorities from 2016: • Secures a 2.1% military pay raise. • Requires reforms to improve beneficiaries' access to timely and high-quality health care. • Protects currently serving and retired beneficiaries from TRICARE fee increases. • Rejects a Senate proposal to cut housing allowances for dual-military couples and other servicemem- bers who share housing. • Provides needed survivor benefit improvements: º Extends the Special Survivor Indemnity Allow- ance (SSIA) until May 2018 at $310/month º Increases Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP) annuities for survivors of reservists who die during Inac- tive Duty Training, to match benefits provided for active duty deaths. º Changes in contracting, appointment and referral processes and holding medical providers. AUSN also supported 28 pieces of introduced legislation that had similar language in the final version of the NDAA, including: • S 2870-Military Retaliation Prevention Act • S 2861-Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Medication Prescribing Improvement Act of 2016 • S 2826-Promoting Value Based Defense Procure- ment Act of 2016 • S 2825-Buy American Act of 2016 • S 2625-Protecting Our Servicemembers' Children from Sexual and Violent Predators Act • S 2482-Cyber Command Employment Personnel Training Act of 2016 • S 2403-Military Family Stability Act of 2015 • S 1550-Program Management Improvement Accountability Act • S 573-General Aviation Pilot Protection Act of 2015 • S 571-Pilot's Bill of Rights 2 COURTESY OF MICHAEL J.
