Working collaboratively with industry and other government agencies such as the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), new products for amputees are being researched and tested, which have the potential to significantly benefit Veterans and others with amputations. In fiscal year 2016, the VA provided care to nearly 90,000 Veterans with amputations. VA Secretary David Shulkin is focused on putting Veterans' needs first and promoting technology and re-design of the organization to make sure it works for them. In the VA budget request for FY 2018, high on the list of investment priorities is the development of a more efficient electronic health record. e VA currently uses its own electronic health record. Dr. Shulkin made the decision to replace CPRS/VistA and to team up with the Department of Defense to adopt the same electronic health record system, which will result in all patient data existing in one system rather than two. Innovations and the effective use of technology in the VA are measured by their ability to improve the quality of care and services for Veterans. From empow- ering patients with access to their own electronic health records, to providing clinicians with time-saving and life-saving mobile technology, the focus is clearly on increasing access to care, reducing or controlling costs, and improving customer satisfaction.
